Remember Travis Henry? Last time we checked, the former Pro Bowler had just been arrested for possession of 11 pounds of cocaine. If you don't remember, let us refresh your memory. Henry and co-defendant James Mack were busted last October in Billings, Montana after authorities seized 6 pounds of weed and 6.6 pounds of cocaine that were directly linked to the two men.
On Tuesday, Henry signed a plea bargain in which he will accept one cocaine conspiracy charge in order to have two other charges dropped. But the deal is no blockbuster for Henry. IF Judge Richard Cebull accepts his plea, the former NFL standout will still face a minimum sentence of 10 years to life in prison.
It is hard to imagine what would drive a well paid NFL player to drug trafficking. However, if you take a closer look, Henry's past is spotted. Throughout his career he struggled with injuries, inconsistency, and general laziness. Off the field, Henry has fathered nine children with nine different women. Henry was likely hustling to pay Bills and child support.
This was not a rag tag operation either. In the affidavit (read the complete affidavit here) a DEA agent chronicles the pre-meditated nature of Henry's drug cartel. There are mentions of Henry delivering death threats to debtors and records of phone calls with buyers who arranged to pay upwards of $20,000 per Kilo.
The other two cocaine distribution charges would have carried an additional 10 year prison sentence each. But there is no question that Henry will be locked up for quite a while. In the government's offer of proof in his drug case, an informant described Henry as the "money guy" in the conspiracy--ouch!
